A Brush with the British Art Scene
BRAND NEW Art Appreciation Taster Course

Next date TBC
Wednesdays, 6.30-8.00pm
Duration: 4 weeks
Cost: £48.00

Tutor: Heather Guthrie

Since the 18th century, artists living and working in this country have created a rich and vibrant legacy – the British art scene. Their work, enjoyed in museums and art collections across the UK, reminds us that while some artists prefer to work alone, others choose to work alongside like-minded artists, in artistic communities.

Exploring groups of artists who have shaped the British art scene, this course will cover examples including the Norwich School of Artists, the Glasgow Boys, the St Ives School and the Young British Artists (YBAs).

The course will take place online via Zoom with a 40-minute lecture and breaks for group discussion.

Focusing on comparisons of historic, modern and contemporary paintings this informal course will enable you to explore a wide range of portraits and self-portraits in detail. Themes will include: royalty, families, friends and lovers, couples, women and the notion of portraiture today. This course aims to address issues of gender and diversity, and to include examples of work made by women artists as far as possible.

The course will take place online via Zoom with a 40-minute lecture and breaks for group discussion.

Art Appreciation Taster Course

Next Course Date TBC
Wednesdays, 6.30 – 8pm
Duration 6 weeks
Cost: £72.00

Tutor: Heather Guthrie

LOVE ART? Let’s talk about it! This informal course will encourage you to think about how to look at, and learn from, works of art when making visits to museums and galleries.

Using examples of historical, modern and contemporary art, mainly from British public art collections, you will take a closer look at selected works helping to give you a better understanding of what you like and why. We will look at themes of portraits, the body (life painting), still life, landscape, art and conflict and the question of originality in art.

The course will take place online via Zoom, with a 40 minute lecture and 20 minute discussion afterwards.
