Introduction to Painting Techniques

5 weeks, Wednesdays 2:30-4:30pm 
Begins 2nd April 2025

Course cost: £120 (including materials)

This tutored painting class is ideal for beginners or people who haven’t put brush to canvas in a while. In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere we will explore a range of painting techniques in three different media; watercolours, gouache and acrylics.
The course has five structured sessions designed to develop your skills and confidence and try out a variety of painting styles inspired by looking at the diverse work of artists like Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Paul Klee, Beatrix Potter and Tracy Emin. There will be a mixture of fun exercises, and the opportunity to create your own painting using the techniques you've learned.
Basic paper and drawing materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you wish. 

This course is over, but register your interest for the next time the course runs.

Painting Techniques - A Deeper Look

5 weeks, Mondays 10am-2pm
Begins 24th February 2025

This tutored painting class is ideal for people keen to explore different painting media further or those building on our popular Introduction to Painting Techniques course. 
In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere we will spend a day exploring each of three different media; watercolours, gouache and acrylics in depth. The final two sessions will be devoted to working up and creating a finished artwork. 
The course has five structured sessions designed to develop your skills and confidence, and lots of time to try out a variety of painting styles inspired by looking at the diverse work of well-known artists like Monet, Hockney, Matisse, Mondrian and Modigliani. There will be a mixture of fun exercises, you’ll make your own artist journal, and you’ll create your own painting using the techniques you've learned.
A small sketchbook to keep, plus classroom painting and drawing materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you wish. 
 
Day 1: Watercolours
Day 2: Acrylics
Day 3: Gouache
Day 4: Work up ideas for final piece
Day 5: Create final piece

Frida Kahlo Portrait workshop - Acrylics

Tutor- Rachel Duffield 
Tuesday 28th October 10-1 or 2-5 
£45

In this 3-hour fun and friendly workshop you will make a colourful self-portrait in the style of famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, using acrylic paints.  
Essential: bring a smartphone- we'll be wearing Frida-style floral crowns (provided) to create a fabulous reference photo for you to paint your portrait from! Frida often included symbolic flora and fauna in her paintings, so please do also bring reference photos of any special pets or plants you’d like to include in yours.  
All other materials provided. 
For ages 18+

This tutored painting class is ideal for beginners or people who are nervous about trying oil painting. In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere we will take the mystery out of the materials and equipment used in oil painting, try out simple colour-mixing and have a go at different ways to apply paint using a range of methods.
This 2.5 hour workshop will be packed with straightforward explanations and fun exercises, and the opportunity to create your own mini Monet masterpiece using the techniques you've learned. You'll leave brimming with confidence and enthusiasm for the wonderful, adaptable medium of oil paints.
Everything you need for the workshop will be provided, but if you have your own materials, you're welcome to bring them along.

Klimt Cats Workshop - Mixed Media

In this 3-hour fun and friendly workshop you will make a glittering illustration of a cat in the style of Art Nouveau artist Gustav Klimt’s ‘Golden Phase’. We will use acrylic paints, markers and collage to create a feline image oozing with elegance and gleaming with gold. 
All materials provided, but you are welcome to bring your own markers if you wish. 
For ages 18+.

This tutored workshop is ideal for beginners or people who are nervous about trying painting in watercolours. In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere we will have a go at different ways to apply paint using a range of methods, papers and brushes.

This 2.5 hour workshop will be packed with straightforward explanations and fun exercises, and the opportunity to create your own mini masterpiece using the techniques you've learned. You'll leave brimming with confidence and enthusiasm for the gentle medium of watercolours.
Everything you need for the workshop will be provided, but if you have your own materials, you're welcome to bring them along.

This tutored workshop is ideal for beginners or people who are nervous about trying painting in acrylics. In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere we will  have a go at different ways to apply paint using a range of methods and acrylic mediums.

This 2.5 hour workshop will be packed with straightforward explanations and fun exercises, and the opportunity to create your own mini Modigliani masterpiece using the techniques you've learned. You'll leave brimming with confidence and enthusiasm for the flexible medium of acrylics.
Everything you need for the workshop will be provided, but if you have your own materials, you're welcome to bring them along.
