Surface Pattern Graphic Design & Illustration: Nature Inspired
Next Date TBC
Tutor: Betty Adamou
www.bettyadamou.com/
This workshop takes you from a blank canvas to creating beautiful nature-inspired surface pattern designs and motifs, using Adobe Photoshop.
We start the day taking and curating photos to use in our graphics, and then with introductory Photoshop training, you’ll learn how to make surface pattern designs ready for printing at home for personal use.
You can use your pattern for commercial printing after the workshop, onto tea-towels, coasters, table-cloths, tote-bags – whatever takes your fancy! Or just print to enjoy in a frame to hang in your home.
Whatever you choose, you’ll have gorgeous work to take home and adorn your walls, or give as gifts to friends.
And, we’ll also get to use a handful of ‘macro lenses’ to see what close-ups of natural objects can reveal by way of pattern and colour.
There’ll be plenty to be inspired by on the day!
Bring along your laptop, charger, and make sure you’ve downloaded Adobe Photoshop (free trail lasts for a week), and you’ll all set!

What to bring
What we’ll provide:
This course is suitable for…anyone interested in learning how to create patterns and motifs using inspiration from nature. Complete beginners are welcome.
Betty Adamou is a multi-disciplinary artist, with a career spanning fashion, digital game design and illustration, and botanical painting.
Betty’s career started in Women and Menswear Pattern Cutting, and selling clothing near London’s Portobello Road. In later years, she went on to work in the completely different field of market research, but still maintaining her love of art and design, going on to then invent a new methodology of online research using games. As a ‘Serious Game’ designer across 10+ years, Betty’s artistic talents were geared towards the digital world, and she has won several awards for innovation and entrepreneurship.
In 2016, Betty, with her husband and dog, moved to Suffolk where the coast and abundance of natural spaces inspired her to take up ‘macro nature photography’; taking close-ups of flowers, plants, lichens, fungi and more, to reveal the intricate worlds within. Betty then used many of these images to create some of her surface pattern designs (pictured). Betty believes that this practice provides a new-found appreciation for wildlife, and that habitats really do come in all shapes and sizes. Her macro-lens photography, and the paintings and graphics she derives from the photos, provides her audience with a renewed passion for nature.
