Modernist Makers
29 February – 28 March 24 5 weeks, Thursdays, 10am – 12 noon Course cost £125 EARLY BIRD OFFER - £115 BEFORE 31 JANUARY Tutor: Kate Dunton If you’re a maker interested in drawing inspiration from art history, or an art-lover with broad tastes in art and craft, this course is for you. In these fun and friendly sessions, we’ll look at how leading Modernist artists like Matisse, Picasso, Goncharova, and Sonia Delaunay, worked across an extraordinary range of creative practices, including textiles, theatre design, satirical cartoons, graphics, stained glass, and ceramics. We’ll dig a little deeper into the Cabaret scene, exploring how it brought together visual artists, popular singers, comedian-pranksters, directors, composers, and poets in a spirit of exuberant rebellion and artistic collaboration. We’ll also explore how the work of these artists in traditional craft practices helped them escape the restrictions of classical painting and sculpture, opening up bold new approaches to colour, abstraction, and artistic expression. No prior knowledge or experience necessary. |
Introducing Kate
Kate is a Norwich-based art historian and gallery educator. Drawing on more than thirty years’ experience of teaching art history in university, gallery, and community settings, she has developed a relaxed and collaborative approach that builds on our natural capacity for observation, curiosity and empathy. Her training (an MA Hons at the University of Glasgow, followed by an MA and PhD from the University of Essex) focussed on the Italian Renaissance, which remains close to her heart. Since then, however, her education work in modern and contemporary galleries has led to a passion for the early days of modernism and women modernist artists. Throughout her career, she has continued her own creative practice as a writer and painter, and particularly enjoys exploring art from a maker’s perspective. She looks forward to meeting like-minded art lovers – from curious beginners to old hands – to celebrate, explore and discuss some of the world’s most beautiful and exciting artworks.
