Hannelore Smith presents her first Solo Exhibition bringing together several collections that explore charting, mapping and recording through a variety of forms.
Wartime stories, photographs and reconnaissance maps all inform my ideas. Found scars and saw marks on wood lead to compositions suggestive of reconnaissance maps, secret escape tunnels and aerial viewpoints.
Architectural blueprints, functional and industrial buildings, construction and the photography of Bernd and Hilla Becher inform the compositions of more recent work. Selection of materials and process are integral to my work; spent engine oil suggestive of elbow grease, hard graft – hailing the workmen in my life. Intangible rhythms and patterns of nature are recorded through scientific research. Data charts the seasonal cycles and travel of particles through the atmosphere and the rising levels of carbon dioxide. The use of a volatile naked flame, fire soot & ash as a drawing medium allow for interplay between the intentional and accidental mark; for me, the lack of full control underlines the tussle between human activity and the power of nature. |
