Hannelore Lucie Smith

Over the past 10 years, within my work I have explored themes that include my family and cultural heritage, migration, maps and aerial landscapes, architecture and the natural environment.  Recently I have become preoccupied with the deconstruction and repositioning of my drawings. The juxtaposition of line and composition is important in my work; perhaps an influence from the family line of architects. 

I am excited about the whole process of drawing. I enjoy exploring the possibilities of tools and techniques with which to make a mark; be this with soot, a sewing machine, perforating paper or print making techniques… I always remain sensitive to my subject matter, through considered selection of ground, medium and mark.  My drawings often remain pieces in their own right but also inform further textile developments where the element of manipulation is key; Folding, gathering, shrinking, heat setting, layering and stuffing to produce both textured and structured compositional pieces.
