Pattern Drafting - Development

Do you have existing knowledge of drafting a basic bodice block? In this workshop, you will develop your pattern drafting skill under the guidance of costume designer, Megan Jones.

You will learn how to alter a pattern through moving darts to change the shape of your bodice pattern as well as altering necklines, drafting sleeves and sizing up and down. 

All students will go home with an adapted paper pattern that can be reused and altered to create further garments later alongside the knowledge to confidently alter future patterns at home. Some students may get to the point of creating a toile of their pattern. 

This workshop will allow students to work to their own pace.
Due to the smaller group numbers, students will benefit from guided support on an individual basis.
Bring with you a basic bodice block pattern you have made to fit yourself previously or a commercial pattern for a top that you would like to alter.
Basic Pattern Drafting

Create a bespoke top pattern to fit your measurements perfectly!

Megan will then teach you how to measure and adapt a basic bodice block, and simple ways you can alter this to create your perfect top.
Once you have produced your pattern, you will be guided to cut, pin and sew your fabric top. 

This workshop will allow students to work to their own pace.
Due to the smaller group numbers, students will benefit from guided support on an individual basis.
Some students may require more time working on their patterns, and therefore may not complete the sewing within the session, however they will be shown how to continue their project at home.

All students will go home with a pattern that can be reused and altered to create further garments later.

This course would be perfect for beginner to intermediate sewers, who want to learn some pattern drafting skills. 

You will need to bring 2-3 meters of fabric with matching thread if you wish to make your final top in this session. If you wish to make a sample top, scrap fabric and white thread will be provided. If you already own fabric scissors, a large meter ruler and a pattern master, these may be useful but please don’t go out of your way to buy them.

  •  Understand how different fabrics affect pattern choices and garment construction, enabling you to make informed decisions.
  • Familiarise yourself with essential tools and materials for pattern drafting, from rulers and curves to software options.

With expert instruction and practical projects, you’ll gain confidence in drafting, fitting, and altering patterns to achieve the perfect fit. Join us and bring your fashion visions to life!

Do you want to wear the trousers?! Join costume expert Megan Jones and over 6 weeks draft a pattern and make a toile for your perfect fitting trousers. 

Over the 6 week course you will:
  • Learn how to take accurate body measurements and understand their importance in creating custom patterns.
  • ​Master essential drafting methods for creating all styles of trousers.
  • Discover how to make adjustments for different body types, ensuring a perfect fit for every design
  • Explore pockets, fly and button openings - creating samples for different options
  • Create a toile to ensure the perfect fitting trousers

This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate sewers, you will achieve a trouser pattern block that you can reuse and the skills to confidently construct future garments.
