WAR / PEACE

Bennys Yard, Sheringham, Norfolk.
October 2014

Gallery

The Artpocket Collective create work inspired by the irreverence of the Dada movement through collage explorations, unconventional textile experiments and sculptural forms.
Rebecca Tough & Hannelore Smith respond to themes including the concept of conflict and the tension caused through daily and domestic duties, the need for order and the internal struggle of the creative mind.
Rebecca Tough

Central to the work is as sense of play, mischief and poking fun. Current work investigates the representation of the female body, sexuality and the myth making that surrounds them.

Materials are selected for their fetishistic qualities, their familiarity and their multi layered connotations. Hair has long been a symbol of sexuality and prowess, hair is both seductive and repellent at once. It's connotations and its malleability make it a perfect conduit for power and desire.

Reliquary is an on-going work which simultaneously refers to the mayrtedom of specific saints and apocryphal tales and challenges contemporary imagery of the female form.

The Trap series explores the myth of the vagina dentata through the use of the simple fruit net, symbolic of the first woman and domestic servitude.

Hannelore Smith

Wartime photographs, reconnaissance maps, and architectural blueprints inform my work.   Found marks and scars from sawn wood lead to compositions suggestive of structural landscapes, secret escape tunnels and Ariel maps.

Selection of materials and process are integral to my work.
My background training in textiles leads me to explore drawing through familiar materials and techniques; Favouring a darning needle over a pencil and playing with the possibilities of utilising fabrics as resists, embossing plates and mark making tools.

The use of a volatile naked flame, fire soot, engine oil and cement as a medium allow for interplay between the intentional and accidental mark.
